Superdrug is amazing! I am a fan of their own-brand products, the ones I have tried, of course. Many have become a staple in my life. So, I was incredibly pleased to discover Superdrug’s Black Castor & Shea range, allegedly formulated with afro curly hair in mind. However, whilst reading this product’s description, I discovered, Superdrug “specially developed” this range for “dry, coarse and frizzy hair”. The range “is suitable for hair that is natural, chemically treated or coloured”. Regardless, I remain interested in the range. The first product I tried was Superdrug Black Castor & Shea Leave In Conditioning Cream, a leave-in treatment (£5.99 for 250ml). Enriched with black castor oil, plant keratin and shea butter, Superdrug Black Castor & Shea Leave In Conditioning Cream is said to add shine whilst reducing frizz as well as “the appearance of damage”, making hair more manageable.

Wow. There is just so much to unpack in the marketing. A leave-in conditioning treatment is often used to moisturise and treat not mask. Frizz and shine are not a priority as there are many specialist products used to tackle such issues when it comes to afro curly haircare. You are not treating if you are concealing. However, Superdrug does not mention afro curly hair so I will not dwell into this too much. Superdrug Black Castor & Shea Leave In Conditioning Cream smells edible. The scent is buttery and sweet, I love it. The consistency is also quite lovely. It reminds me of a light creamy body butter. Superdrug Black Castor & Shea Leave In Conditioning Cream can be applied to dry as well as wet hair.

Superdrug Black Castor & Shea Leave In Conditioning Cream effortlessly melts into both dry and wet hair; a little goes a long way. I have used this twice on my waist length curly afro 4A hair and one third of this tiny jar remains. When I applied Superdrug Black Castor & Shea Leave In Conditioning Cream to dry hair, it lightly defined and softened my curls. When I applied it to wet hair, it left my curls very parched and oily once dried. Regardless of the condition of my hair before application, Superdrug Black Castor & Shea Leave In Conditioning Cream always left my hair flaky. Yes, this stuff flakes a lot! It also fails to penetrate and simply sits on your hair, leaving everything feeling oily as well as temporarily soft instead of conditioned. I really wanted to like Superdrug Black Castor & Shea Leave In Conditioning Cream but I don’t. Nevertheless, I am still open to trying other products from the range.
